About Us

PFLAG was founded in 1973 as the nation’s largest family and ally organization for LGBTQIA+ people.  While the original initials stood for Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gay people, the term PFLAG has a more inclusive meaning today. PFLAG has 400 chapters and 200,000 supporters in all 50 states. PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., has a national board of directors and 13 regional directors. Georgia has several PFLAG chapters (i.e., Atlanta, Johns Creek, Blairsville, Columbus, Brunswick, etc.).

Our local PFLAG Athens Area group hopes to meet monthly–to talk, support each other, support our family members, and advocate for them and other queer people in Athens and surrounding counties. For more about PFLAG national, click here.

Our Vision

PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ+ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves, and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value, and affirm LGBTQ+ individuals.
